| | Hunting Humans (Insatiable) - Ritchie Blackmore | ] | Animal Farm is a brilliant book because of the author’s genius in portraying the emergence and the subsequent ramifications of an oppressive/totalitarian rule. It seems just perfect that the author has chosen animals as the principal characters here because only through the sufferings of the dumb horses, the plight of the mute cows and sows are we able to empathize. I recollect a saying that goes “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, and this is more than manifest in the book.
The book was written during the world war period and supposedly it is the result of the author’s disapproval of what was going on in Stalin’s Russia at that time. But politics aside, the unfolding of the whole idea, from the conception of utopian ideals to their slow decay and finally their being rendered meaningless (by some specious alteration) is a brilliant illustration of decadence, be it targeted at a society or a person which is more or less the same thing, especially when the people have been categorized as either pigs, dogs or sheep.
“All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others” had me in splits. The book makes for some easy reading and I was able to finish it in one sitting. |

| | Man on the Silver Mountain - Rainbow | ] | It is truly a book of sheer genius and the genius is in the details. I picked this book up after being recommended by a friend and I am glad to have read this one. The idea of a starved and tired old man's struggle with a humongous fish is dished out is such brilliant detail that you cant help but feel every single pain the old man goes through, both physical and mental. It's striking symbolism to life and existence is rich and pungent. Its amazing that in troubled times and while facing insurmountable circumstances, all that is required is perseverance and the ability to keep a clear head and thats precisely the message that I could glean from the book. |

| | Inner Circle - Games People Play | ] | Watched Jackie Brown on sundance yesterday. I came across this movie while flitting through the movie channels. I thought I'll sit through the first ten minutes and then doze off, but the movie built on so very well to keep me from getting up from the couch even to pee! The plot was like something straight out of a James Hadley Chase novel with the characters double crossing each other ever so cleverly. Reminded me of the days when I used to be hooked to Chase novels, "The way the cookie crumbles" was one such book which I could not give up without reading twice or probably more. Neways later was I to learn that it was directed by none other than the master himself..Quentin Tarantino!! and some claim that this is one of his best movies till date, which is debatable especially after Kill Bill. But the most enjoyable character in the movie was Samuel Jackson..he had me in splits. Playing the role of an arms dealer in the LA area, he is dangerous and smooth at the same time and his dialogues are so rich with humor. This is definitely worth a watch. This movie is based on a novel "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard. Apparently most of his crime novels have been adapted to screen, a famous one being "Get Shorty". And also Quentin supposedly was a huge fan, so much so that when he was young he was caught stealing one of Elmore Leonard's books, which gives me reason enough to spend some time this summer with Leonard's books. |

| Just an Update |
[Jan. 31st, 2005|06:41 pm] |
Things are going past me at an amazing speed. Even before I realised, the first semester has flown by, the new semester has already begun to unfold itself and the winter break just seemed like a dream. The NewYork trip finally materialised..well that seems to be the only worthwhile thing I have done during the entire break..apart from watching lots and lots of movies..i'm sure i have pissed off guys at blockbuster by showing up almost everyday. Vacationing aside, now its time to get down to some serious business, which means more time with academic books and assignments/projects. Also am reading the following three non-academic books which have been carried over from the holidays : "HitchHikers guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams", "Its not about the bike, My journey back to Life - Lance Armstrong" and "The Tao of Physics - Fritjof Capra". Well apart from these engagements, I'm working my ass off on a VHDL project. Hopefully I complete them all very soon and takeup other interesting stuff. |

| DC rocks! |

| | good | ] | Went on a tour of DC today. To be frank..I liked Georgetown more than the heart of DC..nice little historic town with its share of shops and restaurants in a old-style setting. Also was impressed by the location of Georgetown university..just beside potomac river..what else can you ask for..? Also went to Lincoln memorial..where you can recollect the scene from 'Forrest Gump'..when the peace rally is taking place. Lot more memorials including jefferson memorial, Franklin D Roosevelt memorial and the Vietnam veteran's memorial were also on the itinerary. I was impressed by FDR's following quote "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". I think DC deserves atleast two-three days serious time to be discovered and learnt about. The thing that I felt I missed the most was not being able to visit Smithsonian's air and space museum. I was almost tempted to buy one among many T-shirts displayed at the Jefferson memorial store..but better sense of judgement held me back..$20 dollars a shirt is still a rip off..although I'm losing my rupee conversion gradually.
White house was not imposing at all..still the most powerful man in the whole world lives there. Due to increased security we were not even allowed to see Capitol building..albeit only from a distance. These Americans are so well behaved..they do not litter, they are discreet, they show respect, man..I wish these habits are inculcated in us Indians also from the start. No wonder they have such a beautiful country and a beautiful system within the country.
The nightlife tour of DC is supposed to be next weekend. Iam looking forward to learn more..however Iam not done with a proper tour of DC yet..I will take some time off probably at the end of the semester to get to know the world capital a bit more in person. |

| | come undone by Duran Duran | ] | This is my first go at the increasingly popular art of blogging. Feels good to get a platform to voice your opinions and also to share interests and concerns. Well, not many opinions to voice as of now. Iam in Bangalore currently after a rejuvenating holiday in kerala (for most of you wondering where on earth it is..., you would find it in the southern part of India). A beautiful place indeed, no wonder it has earned the sobriquet 'Gods' own country'. For people who are looking forward to holiday in kerala, I would highly recommend a visit to the 'cherai beach' which is on the outskirts of Ernakulam. It is one among the cleanest beaches in southern India for sure. Also recommended is a relaxing cruise in a houseboat/countryboat on the pristine backwaters. The feeling is divine especially when accompanied with a drink of toddy(extract from the local coconut tree which takes you to a new high).Boy! what a wonderful time we had!.Looking forward to many such wonderful holidays. But not for some time in the near future now as lot of work is pending here in Bangalore.Well, I'll sign off now.More to come so watch this space. |
